Hear from members of the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities
The UK Network of Age-friendly Communities is a growing movement, with over 80 places across the country committed to making their community a better place to age in.
At our 2023 conference, we caught up with network members to hear what age-friendly means to them, what is happening to make ageing better in their place, and the benefits they’ve found in being a member of the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities.

According to my researches I have discovered that there was a time in the not too far distant past when human beings lived many hundreds and even thousands of years. To wit, the Sumerian King Lists and the story regarding Methuselah; even if the Bible is only half right, that chap would have lived nearly 500 years. At 73.5 I believe I am just coming out of adolescence as I am beginning to put some important pieces together to make sense of this cosmic circus we're in. I ride a motorcycle; a 650, Kawasaki Versys. In two riding seasons since I bought the bike I've clocked over 26,000 km on it. I also write books, compose classical cross over music in Logic Pro X and I paint pictures, lots and lots of pictures to the point my studio is overflowing with inventory. I have a clowder of three wonderful furry friends who I take care of and I read a lot, a whole lot. Indeed, my home has many filled book cases in every room except the bathrooms. However, there are books there, just not shelves of them. A lot of my time is also spent watching documentaries of various sorts from motorcycling to history or geography films. My life is eclectic and eccentric at the same time. I just got a new chain and front sprocket on my bike today and can't wait to go riding again. If your life is boring, do yourself a favour, go get yourself a motorcycle and train up to riding the thing. Do not buy too big a bike for your skill levels and definitely invest in good quality gear: boots, pants, jacket, gloves and a full face helmet; black tin pots and open face turtle shells are useless and will not do much to protect you if you come off your bike. Avoid coming off your bike by training, training, and more training. Watch motorcycle videos of how to and how not to ride and consider every one driving four wheelers + that they are deaf, dumb and blind. So, train to make sure you are always visible, do not consume alcohol when riding, keep your distance and always consider every ride another training opportunity. Because both of your brains are engaged when riding a motorcycle and your body is vibrated and you have to handle the five hundred pound plus beast and keep it upright; you get fit and stay youthful. And, engage with and befriend young people. I have a lot of friends who are 30 or more years younger than me. A lot of poor ageing is also due to a bad attitude and poor mood. Me, I'm always fabulous, even if I have a tummy ache or whatever. I am just happy to have woken up this morning and got to ride my bike to the shop for a new chain, as I said. So, my advice is live and do stuff. Get out of your comfort zones. If you are not living on the edge you are taking up too much space anyway. Go hard or go home. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. It is Never2Late. Have a happy life, all of you reading this. If you put my name into your browser you will see who I am. Cheers and ride safe.

Every one, at some point/ stage in life, knows that one is old now as he can’t perform certain mundane tasks! Though his brain is still sharp and discerning! And it usually happens, different in each case though, in between 70 to 80 years span! There may be exceptions to it in some cases!!

70, the end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood in my opinion. Most human beings younger than 70 are still adolescent dim wits. I expect to leave this planet sometime in the 100 zone, but, you never know. I do ride a motorcycle; sometimes extremely fast or in weird off roadish places. I am 73.5.

At 57 I can't think of a better time to be an advocate for ageing better. I never bought into the old narratives of our ageing parents and grandparents anyway. I Just bought the book and as a blogger and American expat living in Yorkshire, I look forward to implementing activities suggested to shine light on the subject on both sides of The Pond. Here's to growing older gratefully.

Thank you for this. What an incredible mix! I feel desperately sorry for the folk who find themselves seemingly abandoned or side-lined when in, or approaching retirement. I want to be able to stand up and shout, "Old age brings with it a precious asset, something that cannot be bought, it is earned only by staying alive. It's called Life Experience." And it has never been easier to record your memories and even get them into print, than it is today. There is plenty of help available for those who want it. My first novel was written when I was 73, in a sort of lockdown imposed by chemotherapy. Four more have followed; I have a new career. I am now eighty-two. Please, just go for it, you can do something similar, if you try.
